Seaman Apprentice Joseph Sampson was Class Honorman with a Grade Point Average of 98.79. Sampson, who was meritoriously advanced as a result of his academic performance, continues in the Apprentice Team Training pipeline.

Seaman Apprentice Javier McMillon was recipient of the Submarine Heritage Award.

Seaman Apprentice Michael Mize received the Navy Core Values Award for best exemplifying the standards and expectations of a United States Navy Sailor.

Basic Enlisted Submarine School is a six-week introduction to the basic theory, construction and operation of nuclear powered submarines. In preparation for an assignment, Sailors receive instruction on shipboard organization, submarine safety and escape procedures.

The Commencement speaker was internationally known deep-sea explorer and oceans champion Sylvia Earle, who ultimately struck an optimistic note in her message to 2014 graduates about their power to offer hope and take actions that might preserve our planet for future generations.

The National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and world-renowned oceanographer, explorer, author and lecturer, nicknamed “Her Deepness” by the New Yorker and New York Times, addressed an audience of nearly 4,500 including 438 undergraduates (169 bachelor of science, 269 bachelor of arts), 41 master’s students (11 master of arts in clinical psychology, 19 master’s in education, one master of science in administration, 10 master of arts in teaching English to speakers of other languages) along with families, friends, faculty and staff. Degree recipients from last August and December also attended, bringing the total number of participating undergraduates to about 480.

Earle noted how appropriate it was on Mother’s Day to honor “the mother of all mothers – Mother Earth,” or perhaps even “Mother Ocean,” since that’s where 95 percent of the world’s life-giving water is. Earle suggested “we’re in a time like never before and never again” for making policies that might, in the true spirit of Saint Michael’s, takes others into account — even if they are the others of the future. Saint Michael the Archangel, she playfully reminded the audience, “was an action figure” representing the victory of good over evil — a good role model in a life-or-death struggle like the survival of the planet that is our only small shared home in such a vast universe.

“What are the reasons for hope? There is no greater reason for hope than this Class of 2014,” she concluded to cheers.

Springfield College recently held its commencement weekend where 600 master’s degrees, five certificates of advanced graduate study, nine doctor of philosophy degrees, and 30 doctoral of physical therapy degrees were awarded at the graduate commencement ceremony. At the undergraduate commencement, 944 bachelor’s degrees were awarded for a two-day total of 1588 degrees.

MANCHESTER, NH (06/04/2014)(readMedia)– Jessica Farley, of Preston, received a Saint Anselm nurse’s pin on April 26 and graduated Cum Laude from Saint Anselm College on May 17.

The pinning ceremony in the Abbey Church was a special event for Farley, who received a pin featuring elements of the college’s official seal and the symbol of a lamp referring to Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp of my steps and a light for my path.” Dr. Sharon George, dean of nursing, pinned with the Saint Anselm pin to wear for the entirety of her career.

The pinning ceremony is a celebration of a student’s completion of Saint Anselm College’s respected nursing program and symbolizes preparedness to serve as a compassionate caregiver in the healthcare setting.

A member of the class of 2014, Farley earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing. At the college’s 121st commencement, Bob Schieffer, award-winning journalist and moderator of the CBS News‘ Sunday broadcast, “Face the Nation,” addressed the graduating class.

Guest speaker Roxanne Spillett, president emeritus of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the newest member of the Berry College Board of Trustees, gave the graduates an inspiring speech. Spillett was selected as one of the “Power 50” by the Non-Profit Times for three consecutive years. She received the “Excellence in National Executive Leadership Award”, was cited as one of the “15 People Who Make America Great” and was appointed by George W. Bush to the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.
