The American Legion Veterans’ Housing, Inc., held a kick off spaghetti dinner fundraiser on July 12, at Griswold High School. Plans are to rehabilitate the American Legion Hall building to create affordable, permanent housing for veterans who are not only homeless, but have mental health conditions and are disabled. When the project is completed, there will be 18 one-bedroom apartments available. The project is expected to cost $5 million, which will be paid for with state grants and fundraisers like the spaghetti dinner.
There were several speakers including Jewett City’s First Selectman Philip Anthony and Selectman and CT State Representative Steve Mikutel. Also on hand was Trina Parker, a former homeless veteran, who is now working with the Veterans Administration (VA) in assisting other veterans from transitional housing into permanent housing. They all spoke on how important this project is, not only for homeless veterans, but for the community. Preston Maynard from the VA, New Haven, presented Bill Czmyr, president, American Legion Veterans’ Housing, Inc., with a $20,000 check from an anonymous donor with hopes of donations in matching funds.
