The technical side of show business turned from a hobby and life-long passion into a career for Groton resident Pat Marcus.

Several years ago, Pat was licensed for hair and wig styling,  and opened a salon in Stafford Springs.  Later she moved to Groton, where she was certified as a make up artist.

Pat worked with such big names as Jack Klugman, Mackenzie Phillips, Margot Kidder, Michael McDonald, Justin Timberlake, and Mickey Dolenz.  “I always liked theater and thought it would be great fun. I have worked for The Garde Arts Center on and off for the last ten years or so.  The Garde Arts Center is a wonderful theater that allows you to learn all theater stagecrafts in a challenging and supportive environment.  It is where I learned to really love the theater,” Pat said.

Seven years ago, while being a hair and wig supervisor at The Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Pat met Broadway Costume Designer David Wollard.  Impressed with her work, David asked her to come to New York and work on his Broadway show, “The Farnsworth Invention,” with Hank Azaria.  She agreed to do the show and moved to New York in September of last year.  After that show, Pat got hired as the hair supervisor for a show called “The New Century” at The Lincoln Center.

Pat was working the Tony Awards this year.  “I am excited about working on the Tony Awards this year.  One of the people I did hair and make up for is Sinead Cusack, the wife of Jeremy Irons, and nominee for best performance by a featured actress in a play.  I also did Linda Lavin’s hair at CBS for a Tony Awards interview she did,” Pat said.

One of her most memorable experiences in theater was when she was working with Julie Andrews on a show.  “I was in the dressing room working on the wigs, and Julie came in and asked me if I minded her coming in to change and get ready to go to a dinner party.  We chatted about our family and careers, and it was so normal and ordinary except inside I am screaming because I am talking with The Julie Andrews.  She is so nice and so down to earth.  It was a great joy being able to work with her,” said Pat

Pat considers herself blessed to be able to work in a profession that she loves.  She also feels fortunate to be one of the lucky few that can say that “I love going to work everyday.”
