In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th to commemorate the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes. On the wings of an angel is what Angela Olsen, Resident reporter, experienced during her trip with Angel Flight pilot Pierre Wicker. This Angel Flight was a medical compassion maneuver, with a lift off in Groton, for a patient pickup in Boston and a return flight to her home in Maine. Read about Where Angels Dwell here.
Congratulations are also due to Chief Ken Richards, Old Mystic Fire Department, who was honored for the department’s work and dedication during the flood. What a success! AngelRide 2010 sported 300 cyclists, raising an incredible amount of money bringing the total to over $325,000. AngelRide was founded by Lynn McCarthy and Fred Brooke to raise money for local resident, Angel Uihelein, who was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 11. Ahoy! Last week, while boating on the Gulf of Mexico, I witnessed a fisherman reeling in a 7ft, 200 lb bull shark where I was swimming only moments before. Talk about a close call! Phew! Happy to be home!
Honor can mean integrity, to hold in high respect, or to bestow distinction. Our first man of honor is William B. Stanley, author and Norwich historian, 80, who died Sunday, April 18th at Hartford Hospital. “Bill Stanley was a great friend to my family and to generations of residents in Norwich who were touched by his generosity, his humor, and his kindness,” said Senator Chris Dodd. The Resident honors his legacy here.
Here, Senator Chris Dodd is honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from Childhelp, a leading national child abuse prevention organization, in recognition of his 36 years in Congress advocating on behalf of children.
A final salute. In Voluntown, hundreds pulled together for the return of fallen Marine Lance Corporal Tyler Owen Griffin. Tyler, 19, was killed in action on the front lines of Afghanistan. The community honored his sacrifice with three days of remembrances. Visit here for photos of his homecoming.

One of them is Stephen Larcen, Ph.D., VP of Hartford Healthcare’s Behavioral Health Network and President and CEO of Natchaug Hospital, who received the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems 2010 Grassroots Leadership Award. Presented in Washington D.C., this prestigious award recognizes an individual whose actions demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the lives of individuals who face mental and substance use disorders. Another sparkle, here, is attributed to achiever Kenneth Reels, Vice Chairman, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Gaming Commission, follows Comedian Bill Cosby and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as the recipient of the Thurgood Marshall Award presented by the Black Law Student Association at the Quinnipiac University School of Law. The Thurgood Marshall Award honors an individual who exemplifies the values of equality and civil rights for which Marshall fought.
More sparkles, with Richard C. Holliday being named Citizen of the Year by the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce. Richard will be honored on June 15th at the annual meeting. Details here.
A final salute to Lance Corporal Tyler Owen Griffin of Voluntown. Corporal Griffin, 19, a 2008 graduate of Griswold High School was killed in Afghanistan last week. “All of Connecticut mourns a brave and patriotic young man who has given his life for his country and our freedom,” states Governor M. Jodi Rell here.
