HARTFORD, September 22, 2014 –The Hartford Symphony Orchestra will begin its 71st performance season with the Masterworks Opening Nights concerts on Thursday, October 16 through Sunday, October 19 in Belding Theater at The Bushnell in Hartford. The season opener includes Porgy and Bess – “arguably the most important piece of American music written in the 20th century,” – The New York Times.
“The theme of the new HSO season is ‘Music Brings Us Together’ and in these opening concerts we will take our audiences on a monumental journey commemorating struggle, bravery and hope,” says HSO Music Director and Conductor Carolyn Kuan. “Together, we will explore passionate anthems of independence – from the Star Spangled Banner and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture – to Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess featuring a massive chorus of Greater Hartford voices. Plus, we’ll present a concerto for koto, which is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument.”
Porgy and Bess: A Concert of Songs was composed as an opera by George Gershwin in 1934-35 and arranged by Robert Russell Bennett in 1956 to include soloists and a chorus performing many of the scores’ most memorable selections. The HSO’s performance will feature soprano Jonita Lattimore and bass-baritone Kevin Deas, along with the Hartford Chorale and the First Cathedral Praises of Zion Choir of Bloomfield.
Tori No Yoni (“Flying like a Bird”) for Koto and Orchestra was composed by Tadao Sawai in 1985, and this will be the HSO’s premiere performance of this work. The traditional Japanese koto is a long, slender wooden instrument with 13 strings. Sawai’s compositions often take their inspiration from the natural world of flora, fauna, wind and water. Koto soloist Masayo Ishigure performed on the Grammy Award-Winning soundtrack from the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha” by John Williams, alongside Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma and others. She currently teaches at Columbia University.

The visual narrative of MATRIX 170 artist Frohawk Two Feathers imagines an historical union of France and England merged as a huge colonial empire. Frengland’s complex international saga of exploration, colonization, and world domination is documented by Two Feathers in an ongoing project that begins in 1658 and will one day conclude in 1880. The soundscape for this concert includes Henry Purcell’s “golden Sonata,” François Couperin’s Les Nations: “L’Impériale,” and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Quintet, K. 452.

Emerson Theater Collaborative announces its production of HOUR FARTHER
Emerson Theatre Collaborative (ETC), in association with Black Stars of the Great White Way – a Chapman Roberts and Richard Allen Center for Art & Culture, announces its production of the play, Hour Farther written by David Horace Greer, directed by Camilla Ross, and starring renowned stage and screen actor and singer, Kirk Taylor. Most recently, Mr. Taylor had the honor of working alongside the late Robin Williams and Mila Kunis in the film, The Angriest Man In Brooklyn directed by Phillip Alden Robinson.
Hour Farther, set outside a rural Kentucky town, is a play about Victor, an adopted-son waiting to meet his biological father for the first time who discovers how dangerous family truth can be. As he waits, Victor takes us on an odyssey with father-figures in his life: his adopted father, mother, and grandfather, as well as his reverend, step-cousin, step-dad, even Superman and Jesus. Hour Farther is an epic play with cosmic and biblical tones told through rural, gospel, and hip hop rhythms that explores themes of love, reconciliation, and redemption.

EUGENE O’NEILL THEATER CENTER CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR THE 51st ANNUAL
NATIONAL PLAYWRIGHTS CONFERENCE
Waterford, CT – The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center is now accepting scripts for development during the 2015 National Playwrights Conference. Applicants may submit works to the O’Neill’s Open Submissions Process through Friday, October 17, 2014.
The National Playwrights Conference, which celebrated 50 years of new play development during the summer of 2014, is the founding program of the O’Neill and is led by Artistic Director Wendy C. Goldberg. The conference supports playwrights during the creation and development of new plays. Authors of selected works will be awarded a residency with a stipend, housing, meals, and transportation to support an intensive rehearsal process and two script-in-hand public readings.
The O’Neill takes its mission for the discovery of new work and artists to heart: approximately 1,000 scripts are submitted for consideration each year. All developed projects in 2014, and seven of eight projects in 2013, 2012, and 2011, were discovered through the Open Submission Process. Submissions are sent to readers across the country and read blindly, allowing volunteer readers to focus on each writer’s voice and story, rather than a recognizable name or previous accomplishment. Each year, additionally, there might be one or two invitations for established writers or collaborations with other institutions; these help launch conversations with the larger national field.
Goldberg, Artistic Director since 2005, noted, “It’s been a remarkable year celebrating our 50th anniversary, and now we look to the future. For our 51st season, I look forward to building on our immense artistic legacy and helping to nurture the most innovative and fearless storytellers of our time.”
During Goldberg’s tenure, more than 50 works have gone on to world premiere productions. The 2014-15 theatrical season will see world premieres of Halley Feiffer’s I’m Gonna Pray For You So Hard (NPC 2014) at the Atlantic Theater Company, Lost Lake by David Auburn (NPC 2013) at Manhattan Theatre Club, Little Children Dream of God by Jeff Augustin (NPC 2013) at Roundabout Underground, and Lauren Yee’s Samsara (NPC 2013) at Victory Gardens. Additionally, Jennifer Haley’s Susan Smith Blackburn prize-winning The Nether, developed at NPC 2011, will have its New York premiere at MCC Theater.
The National Playwrights Conference was launched in 1964. Playwrights have shaped the Conference from its very inception. When founder George C. White first gathered a prominent group of emerging writers to discuss their needs, the result was the “O’Neill model” – a place where playwrights can focus entirely on the development of their plays in workshop production without the pressures of commercial endeavors. More than 600 plays have evolved through the National Playwrights Conference.
The O’Neill continues to build an endowment to support Open Submissions. Initiated in 2006 with donations made in honor of O’Neill playwright Wendy Wasserstein, interest income helps support the submission and selection process.

Theater, dance and comedy line up in ‘The Queue’
Air travel can be mundane or even malicious, as evidenced by recent news of diverted flights and unruly passengers. But the Chicago-based dance theater company Lucky Plush Productions has turned a situation most people dread into an amusing and energizing experience with “The Queue,” the first performance in the new season of onStage at Connecticut College, on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium.
The characters in “The Queue” are in line at a fictional international airport, where they mix melancholy and morbid ideas about life and death with slapstick, vaudeville and Busby Berkeley-style choreography to create a comedic and moving production of dance and theater. The central narrative comes from “A Will and No Will, or a Bone for the Lawyers,” a 1946 farcical play in which a man’s impending death creates chaos as other characters evaluate their roles in his life and lobby for inheritances. “The Queue” has been compared to the physical humor of Charlie Chaplain and the rhythm and timing of Jacques Tati.
“It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” said Rob Richter, director of arts programming at Connecticut College, “funny but forlorn, a mix of theater and dance, and all in such a banal setting. This truly is a performance that will have wide-ranging appeal.”
