Sailors and ships, lines and knots. Does it get any better?
Matt and Jill Beaudoin of Mystic Knotwork are hoping that their nautical knotwork will advance to the next round in Martha Stewart’s American Made competition. Voting ends September 13, and any individual may cast up to six votes per day for their favorite American product. This is a high point for the family’s nautical-knot business, which was started by Matt’s grandfather, Alton Beaudoin, in 1957 on Mystic’s Greenmanville Avenue.
The connection with Martha Stewart has already brought an upturn in the business’s fortunes. On board the schooner Mystic, Matt and Jill brought their work with them on a June 4 cruise to Newport, R.I. This venue is seamlessly appropriate, of course, weaving sailors’ knot-bracelets from a single length of cord while sailing aboard a three-masted schooner. The couple works continuously throughout the day, filling a large order for the bracelets while sails and courses are set. So practiced are they at the craft that they carry on conversations and pose for photos even as the next bracelet takes shape, as though woven by mystic, unseen hands.
In addition to sailors’ knot bracelets—of which over 100 styles can be created for seafarers or landlubbers alike—the couple produces home decorations, keychains, anklets, ropework for boats, and necklaces. They also supply ropework pieces for nautical-themed weddings and for event planners across the nation.
