Supporting a family member with intellectual or developmental disabilities can become what amounts to a second full-time job for caregivers.  For more than 60 years, The Arc New London County has provided a chance for hard-working families to take an occasional break through respite services, through critical support groups and through community inclusion activities for loved ones with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  These are such important programs, but they are costly to run.
Indeed, most of the programs could not exist at all but for the generosity of the community and The Arc New London County’s funding events, which raise critical dollars that aid families in need and help people with disabilities become as independent as possible here in Southeastern Connecticut.
Here’s what you can do to help!  The Arc New London County is hosting its 6th Annual Pirate Party on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at The Mystic Arts Center.  This fun and festive night includes a live pirate battle aboard the Argia in the Mystic River, music by the Denise & Tony Band, delicious food provided by A Thyme To Cook, free spirits provided by Pyrat Rums, chantey songs by Free Men of the Sea and a silent auction filled with quality items – all included for the price of a ticket!
Don’t miss a chance to meet WNBA star and ESPN presenter Kara Lawson (and Blaze, too!), bid on a guitar autographed by country superstar Kenny Chesney or enjoy the special basket auction, which includes a hand-crafted Pirate boat perfect for your bar or recreation room. Other basket themes include fitness madness, a day at the parade (with kids play wagon), baking fun, beach party and more!
All proceeds benefit The Arc New London County’s Community Life & Advocacy Program. The Arc’s empowerment groups offer survivors of sexual and domestic abuse a chance to heal in a safe environment. Credible studies put the number of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who have been sexually abused at 80%. Some 40% are survivors of domestic violence. Funding life skills and supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is an important way that you can help!
