Every Friday evening this past February, people were gliding across at the rink on New London’s Parade Plaza from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for the admission price of a donation of non-perishable food items. Sponsored by Citizens Bank, the food drive benefits the Gemma Moran-United Way Food Center in its ongoing mission to provide food to those in need.
On the appropriately wintry kick-off of the drive, volunteers from Citizens Bank joined members of the United States Navy and staff from the rink to collect the donations and offer encouragement to the hardy skaters. Most of the participants were young, some new to walking even without contending with skates, but the evening got off to an enthusiastic start, and good use made of the nearby warming cabin!
