Former University of Connecticut basketball player—and current Memphis Grizzlies star—Rudy Gay is a new Role Model of the Year, designated “for his ability to inspire others and his willingness to give back to his community.” Gay was awarded the keys to Middletown by Mayor Daniel Drew. Selected by the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, he was also honored with his own day by Governor Dannel P. Malloy.
The awards breakfast was attended by more than 500 businessmen and women and 100 local children. The gathering featured speakers Ned Handy, President, Citizens Bank, Connecticut, as well the university’s famed men’s basketball coach, Jim Calhoun. Handy had the privilege of introducing Calhoun, who served as Rudy’s mentor in college and as the catalyst for Gay’s future success.
