With Breast Cancer Awareness month, it is important to shine a light on breast health for women. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet may help reduce your risk of breast cancer; however, committing to change your habits is sometimes easier said than done. Here are a few tips that make it easy for women to take care of their bodies and may reduce the risk of breast cancer:

1. Don’t be shy about breast health. Talk to your doctor and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

2. Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes daily to help maintain a healthy body weight.

3. Make sure that you are performing regular self breast examinations at home, as well as getting yearly mammograms if you are over the age of 40.

4. Maintain a healthy diet by incorporating the right foods into your daily routine.

One food that is extremely important to include in a healthy diet is eggs, and Eggland’s Best (EB) eggs can help provide several key nutrients most Americans lack in their diet.

“With increased amounts of Vitamin A, B2, B12, D, choline and Omega-3 plus lower saturated fat and cholesterol, Eggland’s Best eggs are a tasty and convenient nutrient booster,” said registered dietitian Julie Upton, MS, RD, co-author of Energy to Burn: The Ultimate Food and Nutrition Guide to Fuel Your Active Life. “As a healthy breakfast or snack, EB eggs provide good nutrition and energy to help you stay nourished and active all day long.”

EB is proud to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world’s largest breast cancer advocacy organization. For the first time in the brand’s history, they will display the Komen for the Cure’s running ribbon logo (along with a pink version of their iconic “EB” stamp) on all egg varieties during the Autumn of 2010. EB is donating $50,000 to support Komen for the Cure in its promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.

See below for a healthy recipe to get you started on the right track.

Autumn Frittata

Autumn Frittata

1  cup fresh corn kernels
1/2  cup sweet red peppers, chopped
1/4  cup onion, chopped
1/4  teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/8  teaspoon crushed red pepper
1  tablespoon water
4  large Eggland’s Best eggs
1/4  cup non-fat milk
1/4  cup low-fat shredded cheddar cheese

In a 10-inch nonstick skillet, combine vegetables, Italian seasoning, crushed red pepper, and water. Cover and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until crisp-tender.

Thoroughly blend eggs and milk. Pour over vegetables. Cook over low heat until eggs are almost set. Sprinkle with cheese.  Broil about 6 inches from heat until cheese is melted.

Cut into wedges and serve from pan or slide from pan onto serving platter.

United Community & Family Services (UCFS) selects Mrs. Jacqueline Owens, President, Norwich Branch NAACP as the recipient of the 2010 Palmer Davies Leadership Award.

United Community & Family Services (UCFS) proudly honors Mrs. Jacqueline Owens with the 5th Annual Palmer Davies Leadership award for her passion and dedication in meeting the needs of the community. Jacqueline is a true collaborator and promotes a sense of spirit in all of her endeavors. 2007 Palmer Davies recipient, Bev Goulet stated, “Jackie walks softly but carries a big stick.”

More than 100 years ago, 1876 to be exact, Fannie Palmer and Emily Davies walked across the Norwichtown Green one afternoon and discussed the development of an association that would relieve all forms of suffering. Their idea was the foundation for what is today, United Community & Family Services. Four years ago, UCFS created an award to recognize individuals in the community who have fostered an environment of community spirit and understanding that reflects the mission and organization’s values, much in the same way that Palmer and Davies first envisioned their idea more than a century ago.

UCFS will recognize Jacqueline Owens at their Annual Meeting, October 28th at 5:00 pm at Three Rivers Community College, multi-purpose room. To attend our annual meeting, please contact Pamela Allen Kinder at 860.822.4146 or pkinder@ucfs.org.

Twenty-five students at St. Bernard School earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams.  Seventy-four students took the test with one-third of them qualifying.

The College Board’s Advancement Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.

Twelve St. Bernard students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award:  Kaylie Bissonnette, Katherine Ericson, Sarah Glas, Sean Hanrahan, Jillian Kowalski, Emily Minton, Brendan Peters, Nicholas Pike, Paul Steinhagen, Michael Surprenant, Jerry Theiler and Tyler Wild.

I enjoyed the opportunity to meet with three of those scholars:  Sean Hanrahan of Chaplin; Paul Steinhagen of  Griswold; and Nicholas Pike of Norwich.  On behalf of the Resident, hats off to these young gentlemen and scholars and especially to their parents!
