Baseball great Darryl Strawberry will be the guest speaker at The Connection’s Second Annual Connecting with Hope Gala on June 18, at The Stone House in Deep River. The four-time World Series champion with the Mets and Yankees and eight-time All-Star selection, will speak about his illustrious career and his victory over years of substance abuse.
A two-time cancer survivor, Darryl and his wife, Tracy, operate a family foundation that addresses autism among youth. Darryl’s memoirs are captured in his new HarperCollins New York Times bestselling autobiography, “Straw: Finding My Way.”

The Indian and Colonial Research Center, Inc. (ICRC), Old Mystic, was awarded a CT Humanities Council $10,000 grant to improve the design and functionality of its web site www.theicrc.org. The grant will allow the Center to pursue development of an enhanced Internet presence permitting world-wide interactive virtual access to its wide ranging collections. Concurrently, the website will incorporate features encouraging local visits by SECT residents and visitors to enjoy its diverse and unique resources.
While small in physical size, ICRC holds extensive collections of books, manuscripts, photographs, genealogic information and artifacts embracing both Native Americans and early settler communities.

The local favorite Eight Mile River band, based in Salem, will join seven other bands performing at a day-long gospel bluegrass music festival on June 13 to help stock the Food Pantry at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Willimantic. If you enjoy beautiful vocal harmonies, you will surely like this free music festival presented at the Sterling Park Campground, 177 Gibson Hill Road in Sterling. The event is a food-raiser and attendees are encouraged to bring along non-perishable food items to donate to the Pantry. A truck will be on site at the festival to accept food donations.
There is no admission charge or parking fee. It’s an outdoor event so bring a chair or blanket. The snack bar will be open all day and those with instruments can join impromptu picking groups in the campground.
