Local sculptor, Serena Bates, well known in the area for her expressive and unique sculptures and her affiliation with the Artists Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, apparently has a secret patron – they just don’t like to pay for the objects of their admiration. History repeated itself when Serena had a third sculpture stolen – this one at the Mystic Art Center before the opening of the juried exhibition “Long & Lean.”
The piece stolen is entitled “The Lookout,” a bronze statue of a crouching lion. It is approximately 12”L x 6”H x 4”W. If you see this piece anywhere or have any information regarding its whereabouts, please contact the Stonington Police (860.599.4411) or the Mystic Art Center (860.536.7601). Serena is offering a small reward for the return of this piece or the two others that were stolen previously.
The winning table was (l-r) Martha Lang, Shirley Snyder, Judy Ellis and Mabel Hauck.
