On May 15th, the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club Sailing Foundation will hold their first Commissioning Ceremony in conjunction with the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club.  Commissioning is a major event as it marks the official start of each boating season.  It honors seafaring traditions passes on for generations, and celebrates the passion both Club and Foundation share for advancing understanding and enjoyment of the sea.  This joint Commissioning also honors the shared history, as the Foundation was created as an independently governed non-profit corporation by members of the Yacht Club to support the community.

The Sailing Center will be open all day, and at approximately 6:30pm, they will announce two Special Olympic Athletes whom the Foundation is sponsoring to sail in the 2011 World Games in Greece.  Please stop by and visit!

Bill Anderson, Senior Vice President, Retail Banking, explained, “What some people might not understand about our Employee Caring & Giving Program is that funds are generated not by dividends or yields from investments. They are generated by our employees reaching into their own pockets.”

The Savings Institute Bank & Trust Company Employees’ Caring & Giving Program recently awarded first quarter contributions of $4,050 to 19 charitable organizations. “What some people might not understand about our Employee Caring & Giving Program is that funds are generated not by dividends or yields from investments. They are generated by our employees reaching into their own pockets,” explained Bill Anderson, Senior Vice President, Retail Banking. “I realize that kind of giving is typical of people in this part of Connecticut, but it nonetheless continues to be inspiring.”

The Savings Institute’s employees targeted organizations dedicated to alleviating hunger and homelessness. Organizations receiving grants are: Windham Area Interfaith Ministry, No Freeze Hospitality Center, Holy Family Home and Shelter and Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic; Friends of Assisi Food Pantry and Community Kitchens of NECT in Danielson; Reliance House and TVCCA Shelter for the Homeless in Norwich; Enfield Loaves and Fishes, and Enfield Food Shelf; Tolland Senior Services; East Hampton Volunteer Food Bank; and, Town of South Windsor Food Bank.

Also receiving funds are:  Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality, Inc.; East Lyme Caring and Sharing; St. Mary’s Food Pantry in Jewett City; Senior Nutrition-Meals on Wheels in Bozrah; New London Community Meal Center; and Rutland (VT) Community Cupboard.

The Caring & Giving program has made quarterly grants since its inception in 1998.  Bank employees created the program as a way of self-directing their yearly charitable contributions. For the year 2010, employees pledged more than $17,500 to assist organizations that address such issues as families in need, hunger and homelessness, helping the elderly and assisting individuals with disabilities or special needs.
