At the Showbiz Expo in NYC, Tom Carruthers of the Connecticut Film Festival tells Alexis Ann, editor & publisher, the Resident, “The good news is that the State of Connecticut has one of the most competitive tax credits for film making--30%.”
Our region sparkles with achievers. One of them is Stephen Larcen, Ph.D., VP of Hartford Healthcare’s Behavioral Health Network and President and CEO of Natchaug Hospital, who received the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems 2010 Grassroots Leadership Award. Presented in Washington D.C., this prestigious award recognizes an individual whose actions demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the lives of individuals who face mental and substance use disorders. Read the story here.
Another sparkle, here, is attributed to achiever Kenneth Reels, Vice Chairman, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Gaming Commission, follows Comedian Bill Cosby and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as the recipient of the Thurgood Marshall Award presented by the Black Law Student Association at the Quinnipiac University School of Law. The Thurgood Marshall Award honors an individual who exemplifies the values of equality and civil rights for which Marshall fought.
More sparkles, with Richard C. Holliday being named Citizen of the Year by the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce. Richard will be honored on June 15th at the annual meeting. Details here.
A final salute to Lance Corporal Tyler Owen Griffin of Voluntown. Corporal Griffin, 19, a 2008 graduate of Griswold High School was killed in Afghanistan last week. “All of Connecticut mourns a brave and patriotic young man who has given his life for his country and our freedom,” states Governor M. Jodi Rell here.

On March 4, 2010 Heather Steel St. Louis sustained a massive stroke. The doctors are hopeful that a long and arduous rehabilitation will be productive. In June of 2009 Heather also had open heart surgery.
From a health and financial standpoint, the past year has been difficult. For all of us who know and love Heather we are certain that she would put on that grand and comforting smile and step up to the plate for any cause, any reason, anytime, for anyone. Now it is time to come together for her! Please come to the “Save The Day For Heather” benefit on Sunday May 2, 2010 at the Fisherman Restaurant in Noank beginning at 5pm. If you cannot attend please consider a donation in her behalf.

The Bradford Jonnycake Center of Westerly is serving as a donation hub and distribution site for the town and all those affected by the flood. They will be joined at their facility by The Red Cross & Salvation Army. They welcome all donations, but are especially looking for donations of gently used furniture, mattresses and household goods. They are also in need of some muscle around the Center, as well as folks with pick up trucks.
Donations can be brought to the Jonnycake Center directly, or on Saturday, April 17th, the Westerly Relief Drive will be held downstairs at the Elks Lodge, 1 Dixon Street, from 10am until 6pm. All donations from the drive will go to the Jonnycake Center, as they are a staple in our community for helping those in need.
On the day of the drive donations of non-perishable food items, diapers (especially larger sizes and pull ups), gift cards, office supplies, animal food, clothes, baby items, toiletries, toys, paper goods, bedding, blankets and pillows, as well as monetary donations, will be accepted. There will be separate bins at the drive for each type of item.
There are now bins for donations at Westerly Stop & Shop, Midway Pizza, Westerly Shaws and Michael’s Texaco, Charlestown.
The Arc of New London County will be hosting its third annual Pirate Party on Saturday April 24, 2010 at the Mystic Arts Center from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. We are proud to recognize the Mohegan Tribe, Chelsea Groton Savings Bank and The Connecticut Sun as our “Captain” sponsors. All proceeds raised at this event will support The Arc’s Respite, Recreation and Camp Harkness programs. These are three very important programs, but they are costly to run and the first targets of government cuts – particularly now, when deficits loom from every direction.
Event Chairperson Karen DiSaia, a parent of a disabled young man, explained: “This event raises funds to provide families with a much needed break in caring for their child with a disability. A week at Camp, a weekend of Respite with a trained provider or an opportunity for their child to occasionally recreate with peers, improve the quality of life for all family members. Unfortunately, these are the types of programs that receive little if any state or governmental support. So, our Board of Directors decided to do something to ensure that these programs will continue to operate and remain affordable to families.”
A catered evening of pirate amusement, silent & live auctions, entertainment, grog and grub are planned. Auction items will include Disney passes, sports memorabilia, pro-golf tour tickets, concert tickets and much much more. Tom Sullivan, retired Arc of New London County Executive Director will serve as this year’s Honorary Chairman. Entertainment will be provided by the popular acoustic duo “Boat Cake”, the Ancient Mariners and Free Men of the Sea. Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 at the door.
