As the weather grows colder many residents are finding their homes invaded by six legged creatures.  Asian lady beetles, clucter flies, and leaf-footed plant bugs are among the most common insects seeking a warm place to spend the winter.  If you would like some suggestions for dealing with and preventing this annual migration, call the UConn Home and Garden Center, toll-free, at 877.486.6271, email us at ladybug@uconn.edu, or visit our website at www.ladybug.uconn.edu.

Eagle

The Coast Guard Cutter Eagle will sail from New London on April 30, 2010, to begin a training summer in the Caribbean Sea and along the East Coast.  Eagle will make visits to the following U.S. ports in conjunction with her training mission:

May 7 – 10     San Juan, Puerto Rico
July 2 – 5    Corpus Christi, Texas
July16 – 19    Key West, Fla.
July 23 – 26     Miami, Fla.
July 30 – August 2    Savannah, Ga.
August 6 – 9    Wilmington, N.C.

In addition to U.S. port calls, Eagle will be visiting foreign ports in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, including Cartagena, Colombia and Vera Cruz, Mexico, in May and June.  These port visits will be held in conjunction with the Vela Sud America 2010 celebrations and will include numerous sail-training vessels from around the world.

Eagle is the largest tall-ship flying the Stars and Stripes and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service.  A three-masted barque, Eagle’s foremast and mainmast carry square sails and her mizzenmast carries fore-and-aft sails.

Eagle provides an unparalleled at-sea leadership and professional development experience for future officers of the Coast Guard.  A permanent crew of six officers and 50 enlisted personnel maintain the ship and provide a strong base of knowledge and seamanship for her primary mission of training Coast Guard cadets and officer candidates.

This professional crew guides the trainees through a rigorous underway and in-port training schedule dedicated to learning the skills of navigation, damage control, watchstanding, engineering and deck seamanship.

petby Sam Mazzotta

This month’s pet books provide interesting alternative outlooks on training and care for pets of all ages.

Many pet owners are interested in providing as healthy a lifestyle for their pets as they are for the rest of their family. I’ve answered many questions in the past about raw-food diets and herbal medicine. For cat owners, the latest addition to the slowly increasing number of books on the subject is “The Complete Guide to Holistic Cat Care” by Celeste Yarnall, Ph.D, and Jean Hofve, DVM (Quarry Books).

This full-color handbook is filled with information and illustrations on cat care, and provides advice on healthy natural diets, herbal remedies, alternative treatments like acupuncture, and most helpfully, an index of resources to help owners find things like environmentally friendly cat litter and holistic practitioners. This is a very good overview of alternative methods of cat care, and an excellent starting place for owners searching for a better way to care for their pet.

Dog owners might be interested in a new offering from pet expert and cognitive psychologist Sean Senechal. “Dogs Can Sign, Too: A Breakthrough Method for Teaching Your Dog to Communicate to You” (Ten Speed Press/Celestial Arts) is a fascinating manual that takes training beyond obedience and into improved communication.

While the book seems a bit wordy up front, it soon delves into practical, step-by-step training methods for you and your dog. Senechal builds on natural cues that dogs tend to make to their owners, and provides training steps that enable dog and human to signal more effectively. But I’m not explaining this method well enough — pick up a copy of this book and prepare to look at training in a new way.

Holly the Cat

Holly the Cat

by Christine Bissonette

I met a cute little cat named Holly two years ago, at Montville Florist, when I started delivering the Resident there.  Every time I went to the Florist, I would look forward to seeing Miss Holly.  She always came out to see who came in the store, and loved the attention everyone gave her, especially if you picked her up. It is the only stop where I would spend time visiting.

A few weeks ago, owner, Lynne Gaffney, told me of Holly’s journey to Feline Heaven.  I will miss my little grey friend, but I will savour her memories. Farewell Holly.  Safe journey!
