(l-r) Mayor Harry A. Watson, Town of Groton, and John P. Silsby, Director, Groton Parks and Recreation, stand at the entrance of the newly renovated G&S Trolley Trail, Groton.
One hundred years ago, it was possible to ride across the towns of Stonington and Groton, by using the Groton and Stonington Street Railway Trolley. A destroyed path lays there now, as remains of the once frequently used trolley track.
On September 27th, the G & S Trolley Trail was presented to the public as a recycled, paved, one-mile commuting path. The path connects Knoxville Court with Haley Farm State Park. This is a launch pad for a plan to help create a more green community by establishing paths for the public to walk or use bikes on.
For the next phase, Groton would like to work with the State to improve the connecting dirt path through Haley Farm and to extend the other end of the trolley trail to the entrance to Bluff Point Coastal Reserve. A federal grant of $50,000 funded part of the project, and town funds covered the remaining $15,000.
