Two local libraries will be able to better serve their young readers due to a grant of more than $6,000 from Thames Valley Communications (TVC), Groton Utilities’ Cable Television Division. The money was raised by a special TVC Holiday Campaign.
TVC officials presented the check to Hali Keeler, librarian, Bill Memorial Library, City of Groton, and to Lois Hiller, librarian, Mystic-Noank Library. The libraries will use this money to boost their collection of children’s books.
“TVC has embraced the importance of early literacy for children as an important foundation for their future,” said Mayor Dennis L. Popp, City of Groton, and Chairman of the Board of Directors, TVC . He pointed out educational experts support the concept of children having good reading preparation prior to their entering kindergarten. He said that this is accomplished by exposing children to books before they enter formal schooling.
“To continue to be a great American City, we need to do everything we can to prepare our young people for the competition they will face,” Dennis emphasized. “Early literacy is the key to their future.”
Chad Burns, a Florida educator and manager of an Early Learning Coalition there perhaps describes it best. “Experts describe young children like they’re little sponges” he says. “Their brains are pattern detectors and the earlier we give them stimuli, the quicker they begin to get the hang of ideas and the better they can do at learning later on.”
