Rascal Flatts & Taylor Swift in Mohegan Sun Arena

What more could any country fan ask for then a double dose of two of country’s most popular acts? Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts performed two concerts in Mohegan Sun Arena on November 1st and 2nd, marking the end of their 2008 “Bob That Head Tour.”

Taylor opened the concert at Mohegan Sun with her song “I’m Only Me When I’m With You.” Her pure voice filled the Arena as thousands of fans screamed. Her sparkly blue dress, cowboy boots, and long blonde curly hair made a beautiful picture against a back drop of blue sky and flowers. The young singer debuted material from her album “Fearless.”

After performing “Love Song,” her newest hit, the Arena filled with deafening cheers, and you could see Taylor’s eyes gleam with the tears she blinked back, obviously touched by the sentiment. But soon, the boys of Rascal Flatts had her laughing as their prank for their last concert together was to send a dozen of Taylor “look-a-likes” onstage with her. The doubles – her male road crew in sparkly dresses with blonde wigs, one with a beard and smoking a cigar – ran around the stage, made Taylor’s signature heart sign and did the can-can behind her as she sang her last song, “Picture to Burn.”

Rascal Flatts took the stage with a dramatic asteroid crash depicted on digital screens behind the stage and on the floor. The crash was accentuated by the roar of the eager crowd. The band opened their performance with “Still Feels Good” the title of their previous tour. The also played fan favorites, “Life is a Highway” from the “Cars” soundtrack, “Bless the Broken Road” and “Here’s to You,” a song dedicated to their fans. During the song “These Days” a couple got engaged, and singer Gary LeVox stopped to congratulate them.

Beyond their prank, the band filled the night with laughter. Jay DeMarcus, bass and keys, told the crowd that they had chosen to play two nights at Mohegan Sun because last time they had lost too much money gambling and need to make it up. Joe Don Rooney got into the act, by describing how beautiful CT women are, and imitating a phone call between two girlfriends deciding what to wear to the concert.

Rascal Flatts ended the night with two encores. The upbeat song “Me and My Gang” was heightened with balloons and confetti falling on the audience. The band ended with their song “Bob That Head” the title track of the tour.

Overall it was a wonderful night of country music.
