To celebrate the unveiling of the new 16,000 square foot, nautical-themed restaurant, bar, retail store and live entertainment venue; Mohegan Sun’s first indoor/outdoor venue with a view of the Thames River is why we escaped to Margaritaville for a few hours.  As they say, “It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a state of mind!”

Singer, songwriter, and author Jimmy Buffett gave a live performance in Margaritaville’s intimate setting, invite only, concert for 500-600 lucky guests to celebrate the Grand Opening of Margaritaville at Mohegan Sun’s new Casino of The Wind.  Guests included Parrot Heads, local VIP guests and 40 lucky radio and two lucky Resident winners. Party hardy on here.

L&M Hospital’s annual Well Healed Woman Symposium was the best ever!  Mary Ann Nash gave us special tips to help stop the clock of aging…. She says it’s possible on page 9.  Guest speaker was Emmy Award winning actress, Doris Roberts.  Doris kept us in laughter as she shared her life story and beliefs here.

When asked, “What do you like best about yourself?”  Doris answered, “That I can lay my head on my pillow at night and know that I have hurt no one.”

Three Cheers to the Rob Valenti Family on opening Valenti Subaru in Westerly.  Bruce Morrow, general manager, says, “We’re expanding in this economy and that’s a good sign.”  Let’s put our hands together here.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A project benefits from your organizational skills that get it up and running. Your success leaves a highly favorable impression. Don’t be surprised if you get some positive feedback soon.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Spend time on practical matters through the end of the week. Then begin shifting your focus to more-artistic pursuits. Resist being overly self-critical. Just allow yourself to feel free to create.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Restarting those creative projects you had set aside for a while will help provide a much-needed soothing balance to your hectic life. Besides, it will be like meeting old friends again.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change in plans could make it tough to keep a commitment. But stay with it. You’ll get an A-plus for making the effort to do what’s right and not taking the easy way out by running off.

LEO (July 23 to Aug.22) The Lion’s enthusiasm for a workplace policy review is admirable. But be sure you know who is really behind the resistance to change before pointing your finger at the wrong person.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You can expect to have to do a lot of work through midweek. Devote the rest of the week to checking your holiday plans in case some need to be adjusted to accommodate changes.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Try to avoid signing on the dotted line in the early part of the week. You need time to study issues that weren’t fully explored. Later in the week might be more favorable for decision-making.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) A new development could snarl travel schedules or other holiday-linked projects. Some flexibility might be called for to deal with the problems before they get too far out of hand.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Relatives seek your advice on a matter you’d rather not be involved in. If so, use that sage Sagittarian tact to decline the “offer,” so that no one’s feelings are needlessly hurt.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) A shift in planning direction might help you speed up your progress toward achieving that long-planned goal. Trusted colleagues are ready to offer some valuable support.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) An unexpected demand for settlement of an old loan could create some pre-holiday anxiety. But you might not really owe it. Check your records thoroughly before remitting payment.

PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to get into the social swim and enjoy some well-earned fun and games with those closest to you before you have to resume more serious activities next week.

BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to sense the needs of others makes you a wise counselor for those seeking help with their problems.

The 56th Annual Greek Food Festival was held in the great hall of the St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church in New London on November 4, 5, 6 and 7.  Capacity crowds stood in long lines – even in the rain – and spilled out onto Hempstead Street at this popular admission-free event.

Paying only for the food and drink, the hundreds of happy diners filled the hall and lined up to sample stuffed grape leaves, gyros, pastitso, moussaka and other delicious Greek island foods, topping off their meals with baklava, kataifi, and other honey-sweetened pastries in fillo.

Father Dean A. Panagos presented the St. Sophia Hellenic Dancers each night at 7pm. This troupe of talented young people offered spirited dances from all the islands of Greece, and, accompanied by authentic music and garbed in traditional Greek costumes, they were a highlight of every evening.

Over 35 businesses and hundreds of volunteer parishioners donated their time, money and cooking and baking talents to make the event a success, and to keep the patrons jolly and well-fed.  Folks gave up their seats and lined the walls of the hall after dinner to watch the dancing and to give others a chance to dine.   It was a memorable event, and The Resident will undoubtedly be visiting again next year for the 57th anniversary of this traditional New London fete.

On a Saturday evening at 5 O’ Clock, singer, songwriter, and author Jimmy Buffett performed an intimate, invitation only concert for 650 lucky guests at the grand opening celebration of Margaritaville at Mohegan Sun’s new Casino of The Wind.  Some of the guests included Jimmy Buffett fan club members (Parrotheads), Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, the Resident Newspaper, and radio contest winners.

Hours before the doors opened, Parrotheads began lining up outside the restaurant hoping to grab the best spot in the house.  Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band played for over an hour.  The set included some of Buffett’s classics; “Margaritaville”, “It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”

Guests were not only treated to the amazing entertainment but also sipped on signature margaritas, dined on mini cheeseburger sliders, and other island inspired fare.  Fans who weren’t able to gain entrance into to the event gathered outside the restaurant, watched the show from a distance and  sang along as Buffett performed.  After the concert, the doors opened to the public where fans and guests dined and partied until closing.

The private concert celebrated the unveiling of the new 16,000 square foot, nautical-themed  restaurant, bar, retail store and live entertainment venue;  Mohegan Sun’s first indoor/outdoor venue with a view of the Thames River. Escape to Margaritaville for a few hours. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a state of mind!

There are currently eight Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurants in the U.S. located in Key West, New Orleans, Orlando, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, Glendale, AZ, Panama City Beach, FL, and Mohegan Sun.  Additional locations include Jamaica, Cancun, Cozumel, Grand Turk and Grand Cayman. The Waterford Rotary Club honored Manly Church, Diana Cramer and John Ferguson with the Paul Harris Award.

Paul Harris, a name synonymous with Rotary, was the founder and organizer of the first Rotary Club in Chicago, in 1905. He was the first president of Rotary International. A Paul Harris Fellowship is accomplished in two ways; a donor contributes $1000 to the Rotary Foundation and wishes to recognize a business or organization or the club may recognize one of its own by the same $1000 donation. This is an excellent way to contribute to the Foundation and to recognize a fellow Rotarian for his or her efforts on behalf of the Club.

Those who are recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow are honored for their contributions to their respective clubs.  They have either made a difference in the community or a significant difference in their club.

Manly Church joined Rotary in June of 2001.  He is serving as President of the Club.  He co-chaired the annual fundraiser “Make Mine Wine” for the past three years, which has greatly contributed to the Clubs many endeavors. Manly is part of the monthly team volunteering for Rotary at the Soup Kitchen.  He is a graduate of Annapolis.  Manly is a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, and is employed by Merrill Lynch as a Financial Analyst.  He lives in Waterford with his wife, Sharon.

Another Paul Harris honoree, Diana Cramer serves on the Waterford RTM, and the  CERT (community emergency response team).  She is a graduate of Eastern CT State University, Central CT State University, Mohegan Community College, and the Waterford Police Citizens Academy.  She is a retired teacher from the Norwich Public Schools.  For our club, Diana is a behind the scenes person, helping on many committees and projects in several different ways.  She is a Manager of a small business and resides in Waterford.

John Ferguson, also a Paul Harris awardee,  headed up a project of sending medical supplies to a clinic in Zambia.  This project took two years to accomplish, and the items were shipped finally in July 2007, arriving at their destination in April 2008. “Without his help in acquiring the products and constant follow-up with paperwork and communications with the folk in Kabwe, Zambia, the project would never have come to fruition.” John joined Rotary in 1973 in Australia. In 1978 he transferred to the Waterford Club.  Here with us he has served as Secretary, President, Sargeant at Arms and the International Committee and helped on many different committees.  He resides in Niantic with his wife, Evie.
