A dinner/dance was held Friday, October 3, at the Jacques Cartier Club (French Club), Wilson Street, to help raise money for the renovation of the American Legion building on South Main Street. The building will be converted into 18 one-bedroom apartments for not only homeless veterans, but both physically and mentally disabled. The project will cost 5.2 million dollars, which will be paid for through state grants and donations.
A total of $1,800, and $100 in donations, was raised from the event. A $50,000 check was presented to William Czmyr, President, The American Legion Veterans Housing, Inc., by John Dunn, Senior Program Manager, Corporation for Supportive Housing, New Haven. Carolyn Forst, Jewett City Savings Bank, also presented the donation. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the project can visit the web site, www.AL-VeteransHousing.org.
