In the spirit of community, United Way of SE CT held an official 2008 Campaign Kick-Off at Avery Point, Groton. This year’s chairman, Tom Kasprzak of Chelsea Bank, announced the $9.1M goal to an enthusiastic audience. The money will fund critical human service programs in New London County. The CT Department of Children and Families (DCF) has a Heart Gallery on display at the Mystic Aquarium. This is a unique project blending professional artistry with the goal of raising public awareness towards adoption. This display will stay in Mystic until November. Learn more on page 4.
Frank’s Place, on page 6, a New London landmark bar, hosted a fundraiser Chefs For Life to benefit AIDS research. Co-owners Wayne Cosentino and Matt Bailey invited chefs from across the State…proving again that CT’s chefs are among the best in the world.
The 8th annual Eastern CT Assoc. of Realtors Annual Golf Tournament, on page 8, held at Lake of Isles, was co-sponsored by Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. Linda Davis chaired this successful event and boasts, “Over $100,000 was raised over the past 8 years.”
Let’s put our hands together for Mary Ellen Jukoski, president of Mitchell College on page 10. Mary Ellen is the 2008 recipient of the William Crawford Distinguished Service Award. This award, given by the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT, recognizes an outstanding member of the community who contributes, not only to the quality of life in the region, but also to his/her fellow neighbors.
