Carlos Mencia at Mohegan Sun

by Jessica Warzeniak

Carlos Mencia is one of the hottest comedians right now.  He performed at Mohegan Sun Arena on August 30 as part of his 80-city tour, “At Close Range.” The opening acts, Joseph Mencia, Carlos’s brother, Cristela Alonzo, and Brad Williams, were hilarious.

Joesph’s act revolved around his thick accent, while Cristela made fun of herself, mostly for being too fat to play sports even on a Wii. Brad is a dwarf and his routine was about his pint-sized adventures in a big, cruel world.

With his Comedy Central show “Mind of Mencia,” Carlos brought the phrase “dee dee dee” to lips across the country. The saying goes, if you were a D student in high school and you married a D student, your child is going to be “dee dee dee.” Now at first it sounds a little mean, but Carlos is looking for shock value. With his in-your-face comedy, you would expect a comedian who’s rude and crude, but Carlos is also incredibly intelligent. There’s always a reason behind the harsh things he says. I’ve heard it said as, “confrontational comedy with a purpose.” His message behind his “dee dee dee” skit is that it is important to do well in school.

Carlos made fun of everything from race to politics. He even explained the reason Bostonians leave off R’s in their words. He claimed that at the end of the Civil War the Confederates said, “You can have the slaves, but we are taking your R’s!” That’s why rednecks frivolously add them to words, such as “potater.”

I laughed until my face hurt from smiling so hard. Carlos was the best comedian I had a chance to see so far. He promises to be back next year, and you will not want to miss him!
