On Monday, August 25th, the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT presented a Member Breakfast featuring U.S. Senator Joesph Lieberman at the Radisson New London. Topics  included energy, the economy and protecting our planet. The event was co-sponsored by READCO, LLC and Smith Insurance.

Senator Lieberman feels that we must develop an alternative energy to oil. “We are an economy dependent on a source of energy that is one, diminishing, and two, is mostly not in our control,” he said. “ It compromises our security and our independence. We are dependent on countries like Iran and Venezeula – dependent on anti-American leaders. That strength of ours could be undercut at the knees because of our dependence on oil.”

“Who has heard of T. Boone Pickens?” asks the Senator. Most in the room raise their hands. “A few months ago, I wouldn’t have gotten this response.” Boone started delivering his message of alternative energy via commercials. He is the geologist that implores us to use wind energy and natural gas. “His overview, I think, is the right one.”

“The age of oil is ending… We need to push ahead to develop wind energy, solar energy, biofuels, hybrid cars, electric cars, even use nuclear power. Nuclear power is pollution free and within our control.”

For the “near-term” the senator said, “I think we need to drill on the outer continental shelf. We got to use American oil as long as we are dependent on oil.”
